World class scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are main attractions of Zanzibar, as the marine environment surrounding the famous Pemba and Mnemba Channels is unspoiled and in pristine condition. The historic Prison Island is frequently visited by sailboat charters and snorkelling, where beautiful giant land tortoises can be seen.
The East Coast, Nungwi and Vurnawimbi (Pemba) sandy, palm-fringed beaches present a picturesque, serene setting of the Zanzibar Island. Spice tours operate around the Island and are popular to travellers that wish to learn about the African history. Here they look at small farms in rural areas that grow nutmeg, vanilla, cloves and other spices, medicinal and ornamental plants, and fruits that are unique and exotic to the islands. At the Jozani Forest the traditional red Colobus monkey can be seen. The International Cultural festival (Tamasha) and the festival of Mwakakogwa is hosted by the rural village people, which presents a traditional showcase of music and dance, both throughout the month of July.
Wildlife safaris are another must-see of Zanzibar’s mainland, they capture the true sense of traditional African history and highlight the Zanzibar experience.
