Serengeti National Park is renowned for its annual migration of wildebeest herds, where they migrate in hope of better grazing land. The months of March and May are the rainy seasons of Serengeti where the herds are scattered all over the southern section of the Nogorongoro Conservation Area. The wildebeest herds are the chief herbivore of Serengeti, and they tend to move towards the north and west areas once the few large rivers and streams have dried out. It is in hope that these herds find any remaining green areas, and food in order to survive. If you wish to see the wildebeest migration in the western part of Serengeti then it best to visit between May and July, however it can be quite a short viewing session as the herds move rather quickly.
Serengeti is also famous for its lions, most of which are monitored by an advanced fitted collar that contains a transmitter so their movements can be studied and locations can be traced. The wildebeest, despite being the largest herd of herbivore are the main prey of the lions and the hyenas.
On the almost treeless plains of Serengeti, a variety of hoofed animals inhibit the area that appears to be seemingly endless. The millions of animals range from wildebeests, lions, hyenas, giraffes, cheetahs, gazelles, zebras and antelopes.
