"I believe that, with other wild animals, the elephants fulfil part of man's deep need for the refreshment of his spirit."
IAIN & ORIA DOUGLAS-HAMILTON from "Among the Elephants".

Maji Moto takes its name from the nearby hot springs that hiss and bubble their way to the surface from the primeval, volcanic rock below.
Tanzania's Lake Manyara, often tinged pink with countless flamingos, lends its tranquillity to this lovely camp that lies beneath the dramatic escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. This is no ordinary tented camp. Dark green tents, roofed in banana bark, shelter in a forest glade and provide every comfort for the traveller. Each tent has a deep, comfortable chair with a stunning kente cloth cover. Mosquito nets over the beds are made from pale buttermilk muslin and the bedcovers are in a thick heavy cream fabric. Sisal matting is in a blend of the softest greens and browns. Fluffy towels in forest tones are stacked ready for use in the en-suite bathroom. All is calm, restful and luxurious.

In the bar area generous cream sofas invite you to sprawl, a low table is piled with books, and the quartzite that edges the floor glints and glitters by the light of the central chandelier. A tempting array of bottles is ranged along the bar all topped with pewter stoppers. There are low stone walls on three sides of the room but the fourth side is open to a fabulous view of the lake. A granite slab forms a monolithic outdoor table on the grass outside, perfect for afternoon tea and buttery home-made biscuits. Fine cuisine and personalised service are an integral part of the "grand safari" experience. Elegant dinners are served in the "boma", a hedged, outdoor eating area centred on a camp fire, where an open-air kitchen involves guests in the flamboyant cooking of Africa. The perimeter is hung with twinkling lights and the crickets serenade you as you eat.

This was once the haunt of big game hunters such as Hemingway. Now skilled guides in 4x4 vehicles set out to explore the scenic wilderness beyond. Famous for its tree-climbing lions which drape themselves over thorn trees to catch cool breezes, the reserve also boasts elephant, crocodile, hippo, impala, giraffe and monkey amongst others. Manyara is renowned for its birdlife; there are at least three hundred and forty species including the flamingos for which it is famous.
